The City has several ways of recognizing individual employees and teams for their outstanding accomplishments in the advancement and improvement of services provided to the citizens of West Des Moines, and for the dedicated years of service provided by employees.  The City feels that the hard work of employees and the recognition of this hard work is in the public’s interest and public funds are allocated by the City Council annually. Several programs have been developed to give recognition to employees, including quarterly breakfasts/lunches, an annual employee picnic, On-the-Spot (OTS) Awards, Peer to Peer (P2P) Awards, and Employee Service Awards. Departments may also have additional recognition that they give to employees.

Employee Service Awards are given in five-year increments to all regular full-time and part-time employees and Police Reserves for their continuous service. Employees that have served in more than one position will be awarded for years of service using their first date of hire in a regular full-time or part-time position. Employee Service Awards are given on the anniversary for employees who reach the five-year increment.
