The City of West Des Moines believes that good health improves the quality of employees' personal and professional lives, which is why employees are encouraged to pursue healthy lifestyles. The City’s Wellness Advisory Board consists of City employees who volunteer to coordinate and sponsor wellness programs and events, education, and information for City employees.
The Wellness Advisory Board sponsors events and programs such as:
Annual health assessment and screening: Typically held each May, employees are encouraged to participate in this event, which includes an online personal risk analysis questionnaire, height/weight measurement, body composition testing, blood pressure, cholesterol, and consultations to interpret the results.
Fitness Facility Reimbursement Program: provides eligible employees, who meet the monthly attendance requirements, with subsidized reimbursement of a portion of their dues for membership in a fitness facility.
Health and Fitness Fair: Employees are invited to take part in this on-site fair and visit with a variety of vendors that offer information on physical fitness, mental health, nutrition, and financial wellness.
Financial Wellness Programs: Periodic workshops are offered to enhance employees’ knowledge of various financial topics.
Healthiest State Initiative: The City is supportive of the State’s Healthiest State Initiative and may participate in sponsored events, including the Healthiest State Walk.
Stroke Detection Screening: A vendor provides onsite screenings periodically, testing for stroke, aneurysm and arterial disease. This service is partially subsidized by the Wellness Advisory Board.
Annual Flu Shots: are provided by Human Resources and administered by EMS.
