Employee Handbook
The Employee Handbook includes the following sections:
1.0 Introduction: This section introduces you to the City's organizational philosophy (among other topics), and includes the one page that new employees need to print, and then sign — the Acknowledgment of Receipt of Employee Handbook Form.
2.0 Employment: Look in this section to learn more about civil service positions, promotions, transfers, non-civil service positions, temporary appointments, and other defining employment-related topics.
3.0 Employee Relations: All about you, the Employee Relations section addresses personnel files, programs designed for your participation, anti-harassment policies, Workplace attire, and problem-solving techniques.
4.0 Information Technology: The fact is, our jobs evolve around technology. The City of West Des Moines is proud to offer its employees excellent technological services. Questions regarding your City-owned computers, Cellular Telephones, e-mail, and Internet usage can be answered in this section.
5.0 Job Classification and Compensation: Questions about payroll? The Job Classification and Compensation section addresses payroll issues, performance evaluations, attendance guidelines, and other job and compensation areas.
6.0 Time Away from Work: At times, everyone needs a vacation. The Time Away from Work section answers your questions regarding holidays, vacation, leaves of absence, basically any circumstance that would cause you to be absent from work.
7.0 Employee Benefits: The City of West Des Moines values its employees and the outstanding services they provide the citizens of West Des Moines. The benefits plans offered by the City are just one of the ways that the City shows its appreciation. Insurance coverage, the Retirement program, employee development opportunities and assistance programs are all included in the Employee Benefits section.
8.0 Safety and Wellness: As employees of the City of West Des Moines, your health and on-the-job safety are top priorities. Whether it's personal protective equipment or establishing the Workplace as Tobacco and drug-free, the City is your partner in providing you with a safe working environment.
9.0 Incompatible Activities: This section addresses subjects that you need to be aware of, such as accepting gifts. If you're unsure about acceptable practices, read through the Incompatible Activities section.
10.0 Travel and Expenses: Employees who travel for City business purposes are reimbursed for their expenses. To better understand allowable expenses and to follow proper procedures, see the Travel and Expenses section.
